There are many different types of cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant. Most people know about THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), but cannabigerol (CBG) is another cannabinoid that has recently gained popularity.

Like other products made from the cannabis plant, CBG can offer many health benefits to the user that can improve overall wellness. Similar to CBD, CBG can bring you relief without causing the intoxicating high that THC is known for.

Here’s what you should know about CBG as it becomes a popular cannabis product on the market.

What Is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the “mother of all cannabinoids.” This is because CBGA (cannabigerolic acid), which is the acidic precursor to CBG, is abundant in both Cannabis sativa and hemp plants. Almost all of this acidic form of CBG transforms into CBDA or THCA, with only a small fraction of it becoming CBG—typically less than 1% of the plant mass.

In nature, CBG is derived from younger, less mature cannabis plants. Younger cannabis plants contain higher levels of CBG than fully developed plants would, making them a better source for CBG production. Because CBG only appears in low levels of the cannabis plant, it’s considered a minor cannabinoid and is usually combined with other cannabinoid products.

However, recently scientists have been experimenting with crossbreeding certain cannabis plants to produce higher amounts of CBG. They’ve also learned to extract the CBG from the cannabis plant at the optimum time of growth to ensure they are getting the highest level of CBG possible.

At Veritas Farms, we have bred some of our plants to produce more CBG, which allows us to harvest from mature plants. Soon, with the plants that we have grown and harvested ourselves, we will have a new functional line of CBG products that we can trace from seedling to finished product.

Is CBG Legal?

Because CBG doesn’t cause a euphoric high, it’s federally legal in all 50 U.S. states under the 2018 Farm Bill. This means that you can enjoy the benefits of CBG anytime you want. Although, CBG products are still pretty rare, making them more expensive than other products derived from cannabis. As the popularity of CBG grows and people experience the range of benefits it offers, CBG products will become more mainstream.

How Does CBG Compare With CBN?

As two lesser-known cannabinoids, CBG is often compared to CBN. Looking at CBG vs. CBN, you will find a few similarities but also many differences. Both CBG and CBN are cannabinoids that will not produce a high effect. Additionally, both are beneficial for those seeking relief.

The differences between CBG and CBN start with their molecular structure. While CBN has a similar molecular composition to THC, CBG is more similar to CBD. These structural differences make sense when you consider that CBN is produced by oxidized THC, while CBG is the product of CBGA.

“Cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors are like puzzle pieces. Each cannabinoid has a unique shape, which will affect the way it interacts with your receptors and what it does when it reaches them. Some cannabinoids are a perfect fit, others are a loose fit, and some don’t fit at all. There are also cannabinoids that prefer not to lock onto your receptors because they want to interact with as many receptors as possible while passing through your body,” highlights Resident Veritas Farms CBD expert Airi Macaluso.

“CBN’s shape is a good fit for the body’s CB2 cannabinoid receptors. CBG can interact with CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, but it doesn’t want to lock on. It wants to float around and stimulate a lot of receptors, which allows it to promote a wide array of potential benefits,” Macaluso adds.

When it comes topotential benefits, CBN helps with appetite stimulationsupport and rest. CBG has numerous benefits as well, which we will cover below.

CBG Benefits

You may be asking yourself, “What is the CBG cannabinoid good for if it is only found in tiny concentrations of the plant?” Well, CBG has many benefits. Like other cannabinoids, CBG interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the human body. This system keeps our body in its regulated state by sending signals to the cells in the body.

When CBG enters your body, it imitates the endocannabinoid system by interacting with the two types of cannabinoid receptors in your body—CB1 and CB2. CBG binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, enhancing the anandamide neurotransmitter, which is responsible for regulating pleasure, motivation, appetite, and sleep.

As CBG works with the endocannabinoid system in your body, there are many benefits it can offer you. Here are some of the current research projects with CBG:

  1. Support for focus and calming through suppression of by maintaining a healthy sympathetic nervous system. (Nachnani, R., et al., The Pharmacological Case for Cannabigerol. The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. 2021 376: 204-212.)
  2. Support for healthy insulin sensitivity and blood pressure. (Nachnani, R., et al., The Pharmacological Case for Cannabigerol. The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. 2021 376: 204-212.)

Additionally, CBG is very beneficial when it is combined with other cannabinoids. The relief effects of CBG are only enhanced further when taken with other cannabinoids like CBD or CBN. CBG is especially effective for easing feelings of restlessness and stress.

Scientists continue to perform research to pinpoint the exact benefits of CBG. Whether CBG is taken alone or in combination with other cannabinoids, it can be a beneficial remedy for many problems

How Does CBG Measure Up to Other Cannabinoids?

All cannabinoids have their own unique properties and effects. Let’s take a closer look at how CBG stands apart from other well-known cannabinoids like CBD, THC, and CBN. a

Understanding these differences will help us appreciate the various uses and benefits of each cannabinoid.

CBD

CBD has gained significant popularity for its potential therapeutic effects without the psychoactive buzz associated with THC. It interacts well with the ECS to support general feelings of balance and well-being for all-around zen

THC

THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis. It binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, which produces all those infamous psychoactive effects of THC. “In very small amounts, like the trace amounts of THC found in hemp, THC usually won’t produce any noteworthy psychoactive effects,” says Macaluso.

CBN

CBN, or cannabinol, is another cannabinoid that has gained attention for its potential benefits. It is formed from the oxidation of THC and is known for its soothing effects. CBN is often associated with promoting relaxation and sleep. Research suggests that CBN may also have immune-supporting benefits — talk about a superstar for your wellness!

Our Relaxing Nighttime CBD Drops combine peaceful CBN with wellness-supporting CBD, chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm. These ingredients work together to support your sleep duration, sleep quality, and overall restfulness for sleep that leaves you feeling ready to take on the day.

CBG

CBG is present in lower concentrations in the cannabis plant compared to CBD or THC, making it a minor cannabinoid. However, it plays a crucial role in the synthesis of other cannabinoids. CBG interacts with the ECS, but its effects are distinct from CBD, THC, or CBN.

One of the unique features of CBG is its potential to interact with different receptors in the body, including serotonin receptors. Additionally, CBG may interact with terpenes, aromatic compounds found in cannabis and other plants, which can enhance its therapeutic effects.

Unlike THC, CBG is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t produce the intoxicating effects associated with THC consumption. This makes CBG a promising option for individuals seeking the potential health benefits of cannabinoids without the psychoactive effects.

Does CBG Produce the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs when different cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds in the cannabis plant work together synergistically, enhancing each other’s effects. It’s like a harmonious collaboration, where the sum of the parts is greater than the individual components.

But does CBG, with its unique properties, contribute to the entourage effect? And can you combine CBG with other cannabinoids to maximize the benefits? Let’s explore!

While CBG is considered a minor cannabinoid, its potential role in the entourage effect should not be overlooked. Although research is still in its early stages, there are indications that CBG can indeed play a significant part in this phenomenon.

As mentioned earlier, CBG interacts with different receptors in the body, including the endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, just like other cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. This interaction suggests that CBG has the potential to amplify or modulate the effects of other cannabinoids when used in combination.

Can You Combine CBG With Other Cannabinoids?

Combining CBG with other cannabinoids, such as CBD or THC, can lead to a more comprehensive and balanced experience. The entourage effect suggests that the combined effects of multiple cannabinoids can provide enhanced therapeutic benefits.

“All cannabinoids are combined in nature. Whenever you use a full spectrum or whole hemp extract product, you’re automatically combining cannabinoids. There are no negative interactions between cannabinoids that grew together. Nature thought they’d be perfect housemates within the hemp flower, and they’re happy to stay together forever,” spotlights Macaluso.

Remember that CBG can interact with terpenes, aromatic compounds found in the cannabis plant, to create a synergistic effect. Terpenes not only contribute to the distinctive aromas and flavors of different cannabis strains but also offer their own therapeutic properties.

Combining CBG with specific terpenes may help you enjoy a more tailored and targeted effect — in other words, streamlining your path to ultimate wellness and relaxation (thanks, entourage effect).

Are There Side Effects of CBG?

Good news — CBG is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for most individuals! That said though, it’s always important to be aware of potential side effects that may occur (albeit rarely).

Any side effects of CBG are generally very mild and short-lived. Some people may experience feelings of sleepiness due to CBG’s fantastic ability to support calmness and relaxation.

If you’re planning to use CBG, it’s best to take any heavy machinery operating off of your to-do list for the day.

Keep in mind that everyone responds a bit differently, and just because a specific serving size worked really well for your friend doesn’t mean it will be your perfect fit. We’re big advocates for starting with low amounts, and gradually increasing if needed. This allows you to figure out your own specific tolerance, and gauge the effects on your overall wellness.

If you’re still not feeling so certain, then you can always consult your doctor for some medical advice. It’s especially wise to seek advice if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are currently taking other medications — you can never be too safe!

Purchasing CBG Products

CBG is typically produced for consumption in the form of oil. Pure CBG oil does exist; however, as mentioned above, pure CBG oils are still quite rare and more expensive than other cannabinoid options.

Fortunately, many full-spectrum CBD oils also contain other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including CBG. Because of this, many CBD oils are highly beneficial for the user because you can benefit from the combined efforts of many different cannabinoids. When used together, the effectiveness of the cannabinoids increases to provide more relief for the user.

Veritas Farms offers a full line of cannabis products, including CBD products made from full-spectrum hemp oil. All of our products undergo strict testing by third-party labs to make sure they are safe, of high quality, and offer accurate serving size recommendations.
